What stayed with me wasn't the desire to become beautiful, but the desire to become fruitful. The apple tree is lovely not because it is admired, but because it bends under the weight of what it gives away. That quiet reversal gave this poem its deepest beauty.

Exactly. And I think it also has a lot to do with viewing beauty a little more like how God does. This type of beauty gets better with age, and, I would argue, actually does contribute to physically looking better.

Happy, sweet, loving old ladies are always more pleasant to look at than mean, angry ones.
